About "Coach" Tim Lynch
As the owner of Maxability, I have many goals for myself, my staff, and my community that I work towards every day. I want to surround myself with good people, young and old, who want to be better, not just in the gym, but in life; a better parent, spouse, friend or family member. So much more than a gym, I want Maxability to be a place that people are excited to come to, and so proud to be a part of that they can’t stop talking about it, and can’t imagine their lives without it.
For as long as I can remember, two things that I have always loved are: being around a group of people and playing games or sports. I’m fortunate to be able to spend the majority of my life incorporating both. As the youngest of seven children, I never lacked attention and I’ve always been very comfortable interacting with people. I enjoy entertaining others and making people smile. Being part of a group that experiences common emotions is my happy place. In sports, I appreciated the relationships with my teammates off the court as much as I enjoyed playing the actual sport. If you know me at all, it’s no secret that I love competing in anything physically and/or mentally challenging, whether it’s a workout or a game of cards. I’m like a dog in that if you don’t give me my daily exercise and throw me the ball in the backyard, I’m going to drive you crazy. My “love of the game” determined that in one way or another, sports would always remain a major part of my life.
It all started when I was in eighth grade and still had dreams of being an NBA superstar, a neighbor asked me if I would teach his daughter how to shoot and dribble a basketball. For 2 hours in their driveway, I worked on drills I learned in the camps and clinics that my parents had sent me to. When we finished, her father handed me $40 and asked if we could meet again the next day. With a huge smile on my face, I told him that we could do it every day if he wanted. From that day on, I started involving myself in coaching as much as possible. In addition to picking up a few more one-on-one sessions, I worked at basketball camps during the summer and coached recreational teams after my own practices in the winter. As my high school career was coming to an end, I knew I wanted to continue playing basketball in college, but I was determined to major in something that would steer me in the direction of what I really wanted to do…coach.
After college and an internship as a Strength and Conditioning Coach for Rutgers University, my days were spent training athletes who were striving to compete at an elite level in their given sport. Second to that, I had a few personal training sessions with adults. At that time, my style of Coaching would differ completely depending on the age, athletic level, and goals of the client. I knew something had to change in order for the adults to experience the same high energy environment that the young athletes were benefitting from. A whole new chapter began for Maxability when CrossFit came along. In 2009, a parent of one of my athletes told me that his friends were doing this new thing called CrossFit out in California. I did my research and quickly learned that this was something special. CrossFit was the perfect match, combining the things I love: sport, competition and fitness in a group setting.
Since we affiliated with CrossFit in 2010, my days have become so much more fulfilling than I ever thought possible. The energy I get from our community fuels my efforts to be better. Our members are like my extended family, and my excitement is greatest when I watch them excel. Whether it’s cheering for an athlete having the game of his life on the football field, or congratulating a 45 year old mother who just got her first pull up, the emotions I experience on a regular basis remind me why I’ve wanted to be a coach since I was a kid. As our community continues to grow, so does my drive to be the best coach, friend, and person I can be.
